about you and me
Many of Europe’s security challenges today, such as extremist terrorism and mass migration, radiate from the African continent. Simply sending troops and hoping for an improvement in the situation is not enough. Working with local partners to build state-building structures, political capacity and military clout are the first steps. On this basis, the private sector can be supported in developing the regional economy. This not only combats poverty – the driving force behind the current problems – but also opens up new markets for the EU. Finally, the resulting relationships and partnerships help protect human dignity, religious freedom and democracy.
I was born in 1966 and graduated from the Jesuit College in St. Blasien. Following my basic military service, I successfully completed a master’s degree in Eastern and Medieval History at the universities of Tübingen, Heidelberg and Munich. In the years that followed, I worked in the press and public relations and sales support departments of several corporate groups. To acquire another additional qualification, I later took a two-year Master’s programme at the University of Leipzig and Moscow’s MGIMO University in international energy economics. From 2016 to 2019, I was a member of the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg and served as spokesperson for interior and police policy. Since 2019, I have been a Member of the European Parliament. In addition, I am involved as a reserve officer in the German Armed Forces.

Last week, I found myself in Armenia for a political visit. It is already my third stay in the country. Very productive discussions took place with Vahe Hakobyan, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, and Arman Yeghoyan, Chairman of the Standing Committee on European Integration. I focused in particular on economic cooperation between […]
Today I attended the Baden-Württemberg Municipal Conference in Stuttgart. As the smallest cell of our state, municipalities take on a variety of tasks in society and must not fall victim to financial bottlenecks. Their concerns must also be heard in Brussels. The attempted attack on a synagogue in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, should not come as a surprise. The perpetrator, a sixteen-year-old Syrian refugee, joins a long line of asylum seekers who have come to Germany with the intention of committing acts of violence. He is the youngest in a line that also includes Anis Amri. What […]
I was horrified to read that a donation from Heckler & Koch to “Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V.” for the victims of the recent flood disaster has been rejected. The fact that half of the donated money was raised by Heckler & Koch employees makes this both sad and unforgivable.Heckler & Koch is a reputable, major German […]
This is the written question I submitted to the European Commission on the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany and the EU. The Muslim Brotherhood has destabilized many parts of the world and Egypt is still recovering from its activities. The Brotherhood has been branded a terrorist organization and it is interesting that […]

Dear Vice President Borrell, Following your statement on the situation in Afghanistan and your warning to the Taliban that they would be ostracized if they were to seize power by force, the news of the past few days about the fall of Kabul and the collapse of the government means that your warnings will go […]
